ESA signs first European Launcher Challenge contracts with Isar Aerospace and Rocket Factory Augsburg
The European Space Agency has signed the first contracts under its European Launcher Challenge with German space companies Isar Aerospace and Rocket Factory Augsburg. Isar Aerospace's contract is worth approximately €200 million, the company said. The funding will support development and flight testing of the firms' respective launch vehicles as Europe seeks to expand sovereign access to space.
Isar Aerospace reaches orbit on second Spectrum flight, opening new European launch option
Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket reached orbit and deployed payloads on only its second flight, the Munich-based company said. The launcher uses kerosene and liquid oxygen propulsion and is designed to carry up to 1,000 kg to sun-synchronous orbit. Isar secured €200 million in ESA Launcher Challenge contracts in August 2026 alongside Rocket Factory Augsburg.
Why it matters: Two flights, orbit achieved — Isar now has the fastest ramp in European small-launch history, which matters because Ariane 6 remains supply-constrained and the continent still lacks sovereign rapid-reconstitution capacity.
