Royal Navy chief declares Atlantic priority, devotes two warships weekly to monitor Russian fleet
First Sea Lord Admiral Ben Key told an audience in London that the Atlantic is the foundation of British security and warned the Royal Navy is spending growing resources tracking Russian vessels — averaging two warships every week. The speech at Mansion House comes days after the £1.5 billion Atlantic Bastion submarine-tracking programme was announced, and follows HMS Queen Elizabeth's deployment as NATO Allied Response Force command ship.
Why it matters: Britain is concentrating finite surface combatants on Russian shadowing in peacetime, a tempo that European fleets can't sustain indefinitely against a submarine force that has not shrunk.
