General Atomics Mojave completes first battlefield short-field operations by any UAS in South Korea with Hanwha

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Hanwha Aerospace completed flight operations from an austere forward field in Pocheon-Si, Gyeonggi-Do, South Korea, using the Mojave short-takeoff-and-landing drone. The company claims it is the first UAS to validate such operations in a realistic battlefield setting.

Why it matters: South Korea's interest in expeditionary UAS aligns with its growing export ambitions in NATO markets, where short-field capability matters more than in the Pacific theatre it was built for.

General Atomics unveils Wildfire autonomous aircraft as MQ-9 Reaper successor for Massed Modular Aircraft program

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems unveiled Wildfire, a new autonomous aircraft designed to succeed the MQ-9A Reaper under the U.S. Air Force's Massed Modular Aircraft program. Breaking Defense reports GA-ASI says Wildfire can exceed Pentagon requirements for cost, survivability, and payload capacity. The Air Force is seeking lower-cost armed drones after sustaining heavy MQ-9 losses in the Iran conflict. The War Zone published the first images of the platform.

Italian Air Force orders two more MQ-9A Block 5 Reapers for delivery by end of 2027

The Italian Air Force has ordered two additional MQ-9A Block 5 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, with delivery scheduled by the end of 2027. The purchase includes new ground control stations. Italy lost one Reaper in Libya in 2019 and another was destroyed in a March 2026 Iranian drone strike in Kuwait. The order maintains Italy's fleet strength while the U.S. Air Force moves toward replacing its own MQ-9s following combat losses in the Iran conflict.

Why it matters: Rome is backfilling losses while the U.S. looks for something harder to shoot down — the Reaper remains exportable but its operational ceiling is now clear.
