UK forces leave Iraq as Global Coalition mission against ISIS concludes
British personnel departed Iraq on September 30 as the Global Coalition formally ended its military mission against ISIS under Operation Inherent Resolve, concluding more than a decade of operations. The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed the withdrawal in an official statement. Other coalition members, including the United States, are transitioning to bilateral arrangements with Baghdad.
Why it matters: The end of Inherent Resolve closes a chapter of post-2003 interventionism — but European special forces and training missions will persist under new flags, because ISIS 3.0 is already reconstituting in the Syrian desert.
