Lithuania offers to fund permanent U.S. military base on its territory
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius said the country is ready to cover the costs of establishing and maintaining a permanent U.S. military base if Washington agrees to one. The statement follows ongoing discussions between Poland and the United States on a similar arrangement, which have narrowed to technical details. Lithuania is seeking a stronger permanent U.S. presence on NATO's eastern flank.
Why it matters: Lithuania is effectively bidding against Poland for a U.S. garrison, turning host-nation support into a competitive procurement — another sign that deterrence on the Baltic frontier now runs through Warsaw's and Vilnius' budgets, not just Washington's.
